The Choir of St
Thomas the Apostle, South Wigston, Leicester ranks among the finest
choirs of its kind in the country. Formed in 1890, the choir has
given joy to generations of people at St Thomas' Church and at
cathedrals around the UK, and continues to delight concert and radio audiences
in Leicestershire and further afield.
The choir is one
of the UK's few remaining all-male ensembles still performing weekly
duties as a parish church choir. The vast majority of choristers
come from primary schools in and around Wigston, and many remain in
the choir to sing alto, tenor or bass after their voice changes or
'breaks'. At present all but one member of the full choir started
their musical life as choristers at St Thomas', giving the choir an
unparalleled reputation for continuity, tonal blend and
sociability. |

|
The choir is
affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music and has the rare
distinction of being one of the very few Saint Nicholas Guild
choirs, an honour awarded for consistently high standards. We follow a structured vocal training scheme with boys
passing through various 'grades', and medals awarded for musical
progress and achievement.
|
|
The choir is
extremely fortunate to have the backing of The Friends of St
Thomas' Choir, a registered charity which supports the work of
the choir, promotes music education, and provides musical
opportunities for young people in the Wigston area. As well as
providing fundraising and practical support, the Friends
organise regular social events for choir members, and are an
important part of the choir family. |
|
The choir often
receives invitations to sing in various Cathedrals in different
parts of the country. To date, the choir has sung at Leicester,
Coventry, Lichfield, Bury St Edmunds, Gloucester, Hereford,
Worcester, Ely, Peterborough, Southwell, Norwich, Bristol,
Manchester, Chichester, Winchester, Lincoln, St Albans, Guildford,
Southwark, Wakefield, Sheffield, Birmingham, Blackburn, Exeter,
Ripon, Chester, York, Canterbury, and St Paul's Cathedral and
Westminster Abbey in London. The choir was choir-in-residence for a
week at Durham Cathedral in July 2010. |
